Two amazing/ridiculous AV setups

I'm an admitted audio/video/techno-phile, and absolutely love browsing, research, shopping, testing, listening to, watching high quality audio/video components. However, I've come across two different scenarios that put any of the "amateur" home theater/stereo enthusiasts to rest. (note: images are copyright of their respective owners)

Setup #1

The first setup comes courtesy of a user going by the name akto from AVS Forum (I highly recommend this site, btw). They have a section where users submit their sick home theater configurations for others to comment/gawk on. In my opinion, akto's setup takes the take. The thread spans two years, with akto providing with us with an update to the config.

Oct. 2004 - He starts with a basic setup including large speaker and a CRT display:

Dec. 2005 - This is significantly upgraded to a home theater in a dedicated room with rear projection screen:

Oct. 2006 - He makes some improvements to the speakers, amps, screen, and subwoofer:

Jan. 2007 - His latest post takes the cake. A picture is worth a thousand words:

He has obviously installed some ridiculously huge horn speakers. To the average person, this is an extreme step, because the aesthetic of the speakers far outweighs the improvements to the sound system. To the audiophile, this is gold.

Setup #2

I found this next setup on digg in January. An extreme audiophile has built a house dedicated to a ridiculously high-fidelity, complicated, powerful, and expensive stereo setup. This guy obviously isn't swayed by the new surround sound trends, and being a purist has stuck with 2-channel setup hooked up to a ridiculously expensive turntable. He has packed a ridiculous number of high-tech audiophile gadgets into this house, I don't know where to begin.

First, a look from the outside:

Here is a great shot of the "sweet spot" in the foreground, with some of the largest speakers I have ever seen in the background:

A closer look at the speakers:

Analog all the way, baby!

From these two scenarios, a few things become obvious:

  • there is no limit to how much money you can spend on A/V
  • people are impressed by a kick-ass setup
  • there are people with a lot of time on their hands

So, what do you think? Is this an obsession or a hobby? Are you impressed or disgusted?
